The Magic of the Dutch Oven Meal
The Magic of the Dutchy
by Maya Hopkinson
Rocky Mountain River Tours takes its food very, very seriously. The Dutch oven is not just cookware out here on the river; it’s an integral part of the whole experience. Let me take you on a little history journey.
Rocky Mountain River Tours was founded in the 1970s by Dave & Sheila Mills. It was a leading operation on the river, known for its great guide family and amazing food. Amazing food, you say? Yes, and all thanks to Sheila – the Dutch Oven Magician.
Sheila Mills originally set the bar and pushed the envelope for food quality and creativity on the Middle Fork, and this influence is seen today in every single meal we serve. Sheila is recognized as a premier Dutch oven innovator and built a legacy of fresh, healthy, and creative riverside cuisine.
Today, we recreate some of Sheila’s favorite entrees on the shores of the Middle Fork. Most of our guests return not only talking about the amazing river, hard-working guides, or the beautiful wilderness… but they are talking about the food. Our attention to detail, culinary creativity, and ability to create fresh, delicious food in the middle of the largest wilderness in the United States will simply amaze you. Yet another reason why some call it magic… We call it the Middle Fork.
Little side note… check out Sheila’s Dutch Oven Book. I highly recommend it.
We create nearly every meal in a Dutchy. Truly, anything that CAN be made in a Dutch oven, WILL be. From delicious pork, focaccia, casseroles, lasagna, and a plethora of desserts and so much more—we take pride in our Dutch oven cooking and make sure it is the highlight of every meal.
But the real secret isn’t just the cookware. It’s the conditions.
You’re hungry. You’re outside. You’ve spent the day moving through miles of river and wilderness. And you’re eating dinner with a group of people who, a few days ago, were strangers and now feel like old friends, or with people you’ve known forever.
There are no reservations to rush to. No meeting to make. No kitchen clock telling you dinner needs to be ready at 6:30.
That’s when a Dutchy meal becomes something more than dinner.
