How to Get a Private River Permit in Idaho

How to Get a Private Permit on Idaho’s Most Iconic Rivers:

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is widely considered the ultimate mountain wilderness river trip, offering crystal-clear water, great fishing, natural hot springs, and nonstop scenery. Just behind it, the Salmon River of No Return (the Main Salmon) delivers a different kind of magic, with long sandy beaches, splashy fun rapids, warm swimming spots, and classic Idaho history giving it some americana/wild west vibes. Together, they stand as the two most iconic multi-day river adventures in the state. Let alone the West… Let alone the US in general (in our opinion)!

If you haven’t learned already, scoring a permit for Idaho’s iconic rivers is extremely competitive. With only a few public launches available each day during peak season, both lotteries consistently sit in the low single digits, making a permit a rare win for any applicant. In 2025, nearly 19,800 people applied for the Middle Fork, but only 351 permits were awarded… which is about a 1.8% success rate. The Salmon River of No Return is just as tough, with over 18,000 applicants and only 306 permits issued, giving roughly 1.7% odds.

However, there are strategies to help your odds when applying for these permits. Here are our helpful tips, step by step guide to apply, and FAQs to help you on your river permit application journey…

11 tips when applying for a private multi day river permit:

  1. Set calendar reminders so you don’t miss the application window.
  2. Be flexible with date ranges, wider windows improve chances. Don’t put all your hope in one date. One narrow launch date = basically zero odds.
  3. Throw a “permit party”, and get a big group of people who all want to go on the same trip to all separately apply. This will increase your odds.
  4. Apply even if your plans aren’t 100% solid yet.
  5. Avoid peak holiday weeks if you can. Fourth of July and late July dates are the hardest to get.
  6. Apply for both rivers to double your chances. Middle Fork & Salmon River are separate lotteries. Either river is an unforgettable experience.
  7. Shoulder season dates are underrated and your chances of scoring a permit are higher.
  8. Go with an outfitter to secure your ideal trip dates and be able to plan for in advance.
  9. Choose your trip leader carefully. While some changes are allowed, permits are meant to stay with the original applicant. Adding an alternate trip leader during the application is one of the smartest things you can do.
  10. High water savvy? Go on the Main Salmon before June 20th, the noncontrol season. Beware, the 17,18, and 19 are chaotically busy.
  11. Cancellations for river permits on the Middle Fork and Salmon River of No Return open up starting March 16th around 8am.

How to apply to for Middle Fork and Main Salmon private river permits:

For both the Middle Fork and the Main Salmon, everything runs through recreation.gov and you apply through 4 Rivers. The process is the same for each river:

Step 1: Create a recreation.gov account (or sign in if you already have one). Use the name of the person who is going to be the Trip Leader.

Step 2: Choose the river you want to apply for. In the search bar, type in “The Middle Fork of the Salmon” or the “Salmon River.” You know you found the right river if the location has “Salmon-Challis National Forest” and includes “4 Rivers”.

Step 3: You’ll see an option that says something like: “Apply for Lottery” during the application window (Dec 1 – Jan 31). Click that.

Step 4: Select your launch dates
You can choose multiple preferred launch dates, different date ranges, different group sizes.

Step 5: Enter trip details
You’ll need: Group size, Trip leader name, Alternate trip leader (strongly recommended). This is not final yet — it’s just the application.

Step 6: Pay the application fee
There is a small, non-refundable lottery fee (usually around $6–$10).
Pay and submit.

Step 7: You’re now in the lottery. Now it’s time to wait. Wait for results (mid-February)
You’ll get an email saying: You were either successful or not selected.

Step 8: If you score a permit you must: Log back into Recreation.gov, accept the permit, pay the permit fee, then finalize your launch date usually by mid-March. If you don’t do this, you lose the permit and it goes back into the system.
